A PICTURE OF PRACTICE BY 2018-2019 AGENCY BY DESIGN OAKLAND TEACHER FELLOW CATIE RICE

Catie Rice is the High School Art & Design Teacher at Madison Park Academy, a 6th through 12th school in Oakland, CA. The school’s student population is predominantly Latinx and African American.

As part of her inquiry as an Agency by Design Oakland teacher fellow, she decided to explore the question: How can I seamlessly incorporate the Agency by Design maker capacities into the 9th Grade Visual Arts classroom? Browse Catie’s slides below to see how she integrated the maker capacities of Looking Closely, Exploring Complexity, and Finding Opportunity into her Visual Arts class. In addition, check out examples of her students’ summative projects and read about what she learned from her inquiry!

“Maker-centered learning gives students the unique opportunity to explore and question their surroundings and everyday items. By participating in maker-centered learning, students learn valuable skills such as problem solving real world challenges and becoming advocates for change.”
